Who is the Ghost Who Walks... also known as the Phantom? Over four hundred years ago, a cabin boy to Admiral Christopher Columbus grew to become an explorer and a mighty sea captain... but unfortunately met his end as he fell prey to pirates, leaving his son alone. As the lone survivor of a pirate attack, the young man swore to devote his life to the destruction of cruelty and injustice...as the nemesis of pirates everywhere! He was the first to take upon himself the title of the Phantom! His son and his son's sons–generation after generation–succeeded him in the crusade. Their faces masked, they were loners who lived lives of mystery and danger... moving in and out of shadows... stalking... feared by evil-doers everywhere... Thus generations of Phantoms lived, fought, and died–usually violently–as they followed their oath. Jungle folk, sea folk, and city folk believed him always to be the same man, and so the legend grew–the legend of Kit Walker… the Man-Who-Cannot-Die... the Ghost Who Walks... the Phantom! Only the pygmies knew that, always, a day would come when their great friend would lie dying. Then, alone, a strong young son would carry his father to the burial crypt of his ancestors where all the Phantoms rested. As the pygmies waited outside, the young man would emerge from the cave, wearing the mask, the costume and the skull ring of the Phantom upon his strong hand; his carefree days as the Phantom's son over. Then the pygmies would chant their age-old chant, "The Phantom is dead. Long live the Phantom." This story of "The Legend of the Phantom" is the story of the father of the first Phantom and an adventure of the Phantom of our time as he discovers his roots, heritage and the origin of his rings. To good people and criminals alike, in the jungle, on the seven seas, and in the cities of the world, he is known as the Phantom; the Ghost Who Walks… the Man Who Cannot Die!

The Legend of the Phantom Jacob Nelson 9780615932972 Books

Jacob Nelson has done a nice job of reminding us that the Ghost who walks is still among us, despite the the loss of the true "Father of the First (and last)," Lee Falk. Nelson's story telling is more reminiscent of the Phantom from the cartoon strips, than perhaps the one seen in Falk's later novels published in the 1970's. At least that's my perception, which to be fair, could be flawed, as it's been many years since I read them. The action flows very quickly from scene to scene, but perhaps a bit too fast. The reader is left with a feeling that things are a bit too campy and each scene could be fleshed out a bit more. This may have been the pace and effect that the author was looking for, but one is left feeling a little disappointed. Perhaps it's because we wish to spend more time with a character that we've missed reading about for so long. Never the less, you get the feeling that the story line could have benefitted from being spread out over at least two or three books. At times, one gets the feeling that scenes have been either trimmed down or cut out altogether. Whether this was done intentionally, or due to overzealous editing, the result is that the story is a bit choppy. That said, it's still a fun read and a good story, one that I can recommend to all fans of the Phantom.

This is one great read! Wow, the story flows amazingly well and the images that come to mind give you a desire to see on the Big SCREEN! I can't believe how great it is! This is a book that moves you to turn to the next page and hope it never ends! The ending is.....well you will just have to find out for yourself. Trust me you won't be disappointed in this book!
BRAVO! BRAVO!
It was fun to read again, it's been awhile
Great story. Really brought the the whole history of the Phantom together and alive in a way that has never been done before.
As a fan of the Phantom, I love the back stories and family history of the generations. I really loved the history of Walker's mesa and how it tied into the present day Phantom. Jacob Nelson should continue to write about the generations of Phantoms.
This is a well told story of the origin of the Phantom. It tells of of the beginning of the legend. The story is fast paced and very interesting.

This is a great read for fans of the Lee Falk character.
This is an excellent book! If you have enjoyed other Phantom books, this one is well worth adding to your collection. Great insight and background into the characters.
I have always enjoyed stories about the Phantom. I read the newspaper comic strips every chance I could and searched out Lee Falk's books everywhere. I have been saddened by the unavailability of them lately. Although this book was not written by Mr. Falk I found it to be an excellent substitute. It used all of the facts about the Phantom I remembered and added more history to the legend. I hope Mr. Nelson will continue with more adventure tales of The Ghost Who Walks.
